Ten places on the island, checked against the six private Sri Lanka tours we actually run — with how many trips reach each one, how long you really get there, and what we do not sell at all.
Sri Lanka is small enough that two weeks covers most of it. The airport near Colombo to the cultural triangle is about four hours by road. Tea country to the south coast, another four. That geography is why almost every "top ten" list for this island reads the same.
This one is different in one way. Every place below is somewhere our own trips actually go. We run six Sri Lanka tours, all private and guided, 13 or 14 days. For each place I have written how many of those six reach it and how long you really get, because several famous names here are a half-day stop or a single night. That is worth knowing before you book, and most lists will not tell you.

All six are private. The guide, driver and vehicle are yours alone, there are no fixed departure dates, and the route can be changed before you travel. A German-speaking guide, hotel accommodation, breakfast, 24-hour contact and a bottle of water on arrival are included on every one. International flights are not.
1. Sigiriya
A 200-metre block of gneiss standing clear of the jungle, with a ruined palace on top, fifth-century frescoes halfway up and the lion's paws that give it its name. On four of the six tours. Realistically half a day: the climb takes about 90 minutes up and down, and you want to start by 7am before the rock face heats up. Two tours also give you an afternoon in Sigiriya village below.
2. Dambulla
Five caves cut into a rock overhang, holding more than 150 Buddha figures and painted ceilings that run unbroken across the stone. On the same four tours as Sigiriya, usually the day before or after, from a base at Habarana. Dambulla takes two to three hours including the stair climb to the entrance. Shoes off, shoulders and knees covered.
3. Polonnaruwa
The Sinhalese capital of the 11th and 12th centuries, lost under jungle until the British found it again in 1820: a royal palace, the circular Vatadage, enormous stupas and the reclining Buddha at Gal Vihara. On three of the six. Polonnaruwa is a half-day excursion, best done by bicycle in the cooler part of the morning — the site is spread over several kilometres.
4. Kandy
The last Sinhalese royal capital, and the one place every single one of our six tours stops. The Temple of the Tooth sits by the lake and holds a relic of the Buddha; the evening puja is when it is worth being there. Most trips give you one night, a few give two. Four tours add the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, 20 minutes out of Kandy.
5. Nuwara Eliya and the tea country
At 1,900 metres the temperature sits between 10°C and 20°C, and the nights are genuinely cold — the hotels have fireplaces for a reason. Five of the six tours spend a day here, visiting a working tea factory and walking in the plantations with the pickers. Some sleep in Nuwara Eliya itself, some in Bandarawela nearby.
6. Ella
A small town on the edge of the escarpment with tea slopes on three sides. Four of the six tours stop in Ella, almost always for one night. That night buys you the walk up Little Adam's Peak for the view across to Ella Rock, or the Nine Arches Bridge, or Lipton's Seat above the plantations — one of the three, not all of them.
7. Horton Plains
A grassland plateau at 2,000 to 2,300 metres, with cloud forest, sambar deer and the escarpment called World's End, where the ground drops 800 metres. On three of the six tours. You leave before dawn because the cloud usually closes in by 9am and takes the view with it. Horton Plains is a three to four hour walk on an exposed plateau, so bring a fleece and rain layer.
8. Yala
Sri Lanka's largest and best-known national park: leopard, elephant, sloth bear, crocodile and a long bird list, across scrub, lagoon and open grass. Yala is on two of the six tours, from a base at Tissamaharama. What you get is one jeep safari, usually an afternoon drive, not a full day and not two drives. Leopard sightings happen, but nobody can promise you one.
9. Udawalawe
The elephant park. A reservoir and open grassland where the herds are easy to see all year, along with water buffalo, wild boar and mongoose — it is a more reliable elephant day than Yala, and far less crowded with vehicles. Udawalawe is on two of the six tours, as an afternoon jeep safari. On one of them the jeep is shared rather than private.
10. Galle
The Dutch fort on the south coast, still lived in: ramparts you can walk at sunset, the Dutch Reformed church, the white lighthouse at the eastern point. Galle is on four of the six tours, and on three of them it is an afternoon walk on the way to somewhere else rather than an overnight. If you want a morning in the fort without the day-trippers, say so when we build the trip.
Four more the tours reach
Anuradhapura — the older capital, 1,400 years of it, and the sacred bodhi tree. Only one of our six tours goes, the 13-day Wonderful world of Sri Lanka.
Adam's Peak — 2,243 metres, more than 5,000 steps, a 1,000-metre climb starting around 2am to reach the summit for sunrise, alongside pilgrims. On two tours, Forests, tea plantations & culture and Culture & nature. Pilgrimage season runs December to May; outside it the path is quiet but the tea houses are shut.
Negombo — 20 minutes from the airport, where most trips start and finish. A fishing town with a morning fish market, not a resort strip.
Pasikuda — a shallow, calm east-coast bay. Three nights of it on Breathtaking nature & culture, which is the only tour that goes east. Sri Lanka's glory instead finishes its beach days at Nilaveli, further up the same coast.
What is not on this list, and why
The Kandy to Ella train. It belongs on every other top-ten list and it is not on any of our itineraries. Our trips move by private car with your own driver, which is faster and lets you stop. If the train matters to you, tell us early and we will look at fitting a leg of it in — but do not assume it is included, because as the tours are written, it is not.
Whale watching at Mirissa. No tour goes to Mirissa, and we do not sell a whale-watching excursion anywhere in Sri Lanka. It is a real thing and the season is genuinely good from December to April. We just do not run it, and we would rather say so than let you find out in month three of planning.
The north. Jaffna, the Jaffna peninsula and the islands off it are not on any of the six. We do not run a trip there. Same for Trincomalee town itself, although the beach at Nilaveli just north of it does appear on one tour.
Colombo. All six tours land at Bandaranaike airport, and all six then drive straight out — usually to Negombo, sometimes to Kandy or Unawatuna. There is no Colombo sightseeing day on any of them. The Colombo page is there because you will pass through, not because we sell the city.
Beach days at the end. On Between culture and jungle and Culture & nature, the closing beach nights are marked optional at extra cost. They are not in the headline price. Ask what the beach extension costs before you compare these tours against each other.
When to go
The south, the west coast and the hill country are driest from December to March, which is when most of these itineraries run best. The east coast — Pasikuda, Nilaveli — flips to the opposite pattern and is at its best from May to September. Coastal temperatures sit around 27°C to 31°C all year; the hills are 10°C to 15°C cooler and wetter.
