Combining Sri Lanka and the Maldives

Yes, they combine well, and one route in our catalogue already does it end to end. Breathtaking nature & culture starts from EUR 1,220 and works through Sri Lanka before flying you to Malé for four nights on an island.

Three practical things first, because they change the number you should be budgeting against.

The Maldives resort is not in the price. The itinerary says so plainly: four nights in the Maldives at a resort of your choice, optional at an additional cost depending on the category. The EUR 1,220 does not include it.

Nor, most likely, is the Colombo–Malé flight. The only exclusion this trip names is "any international flights". Colombo to Malé is an international sector. Assume it is on you, and ask us to confirm it in writing on your quote.

Check the length. The listing shows 14 days. The day-by-day numbering runs to day 17, because free days are grouped into single entries. Get the exact number of nights confirmed before you book flights around it.

What the route actually covers

In the order you travel it:

• Colombo — Gangaramaya Temple and the Pettah Floating Market, on your arrival evening
• Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, on the drive inland
• Dambulla — the cave temples, more than 150 images of the Buddha, wall paintings from several eras
• Sigiriya — the rock, its water gardens, frescoes and mirror wall, plus a walk through the village below it
• Pasikuda on the east coast — open beach days, unstructured
• Kandy — the Temple of the Tooth, and a dance and drumming performance
• Nuwara Eliya — a tea factory and a walk through the plantations
• Tissamaharama, by way of the pilgrimage town of Kataragama
• Yala National Park — one jeep safari, plus the rock monastery at Sithulpawwa
• Galle — the Dutch fort, and the turtle hatchery at Hikkaduwa
• Fly Colombo to Malé, then four nights on one island

Worth knowing what it leaves out. This is not the Cultural Triangle route. It takes Dambulla and Sigiriya, then turns east to the coast rather than continuing to Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura. There is also no hill-country train leg — not on this route, and not on any Sri Lanka route we sell. The Kandy to Nuwara Eliya stretch is by road, with your guide and driver.

What the price covers

Every trip we sell is private. There are no scheduled group departures at all, so you pick your own dates and travel with your own guide and driver.

Included: hotel accommodation, breakfast, a German-speaking guide for the whole trip, a bottle of water on arrival, and someone reachable 24 hours a day. Not included: international flights.

One gap to know about. This itinerary does not name its hotels in advance. Some of our routes list every property and room type; this one does not. Ask for the hotel list with your quote rather than assuming. Across the catalogue, rooms are mostly Standard, Deluxe and Superior. There is no five-star tier, and no overwater villa appears in any itinerary we sell that touches the Maldives. Better to read that here than find out at check-in.

The months where both halves work

The Maldives has one dry season, roughly December to April.

Sri Lanka has two monsoons on opposite schedules, so one coast is usually drier than the other. The south and west — Colombo, Galle, Yala — are driest from about December to March.

Overlap those and you get the answer: February to early April. Late February and March are the two strongest months for this particular route. The south coast has dried out, the Maldives is mid dry season, and the east coast has come out of its own wet spell.

Temperatures to plan against:

• Colombo, Galle, Pasikuda: 30–32°C by day, humid, all year
• Yala: 32–35°C in the dry months, and dusty
• Nuwara Eliya: about 1,900 m up. 18–22°C by day, single digits some nights in January and February. Pack a fleece — people are caught out by this every year
• Maldives: 30–31°C by day, sea around 28°C

Where the two seasons disagree

This is the honest complication, and it comes from the route itself. It visits both Sri Lankan coasts — Pasikuda in the east, Galle in the south — then adds the Maldives. No single month is right for all three.

July and August are when Pasikuda is at its best. They are also when Galle sits under the southwest monsoon, and when the Maldives is in its wetter, windier half. That does not mean rain all day in the Maldives. It means more wind, more swell and more cloud than the photographs suggest.

January is good for Galle and the Maldives, and the least reliable for the Pasikuda beach days, which can be grey and rough.

If you want one instruction: aim for March. If you cannot, decide which beach matters more and tell us. These are tailor-made routes, so the order and the length of each leg can move.

Two more date checks. Yala's main block has closed to visitors for part of September and mid-October in some years, for the dry season — confirm your dates against it if your trip falls near then. And on a single drive, a leopard is a chance, not a promise. Plan for elephants, crocodiles and birds, and treat a leopard as the day you got lucky.

What the four island nights actually are

Unstructured, which is the point. There is no diving, snorkelling trip or island-hopping scheduled on any of our Maldives legs. Whatever you do on the water is arranged through your hotel once you arrive, and some of it costs extra.

Note also that this itinerary does not describe how you get from Malé airport out to your island. Our other two Maldives trips do, and both use a speedboat. Since the resort here is an optional extra you choose, the transfer probably depends on which island you pick. Another one for the quote.

The other two ways to reach the islands

Three trips in the catalogue touch the Maldives, and they are not equivalent.

India's facets & Maldives, 15 days from EUR 3,140, spends ten days through Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan and Mumbai before flying to the islands on day 11. It is the only one that names the property in advance: Embudu Village Resort, four nights in a Superior Beach Bungalow, with the speedboat transfer written into the itinerary. If knowing exactly where you are sleeping matters to you, that is the route that tells you.

Travel component: Paradise island Maldives, five days from EUR 700, is an add-on rather than a holiday: speedboat in from Malé, three open beach days, transfer back. It is written as a tail to an India trip, but ask us and we will look at pairing it with a Sri Lanka route instead.
