We are an India, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka operator. Three of our trips finish with four nights in the Maldives. Here is what that is, what it is not, and what a first-timer actually needs to know.
We are an India, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka operator. The Maldives is not our country, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. Three of our 31 trips touch it, always in the same shape: four nights on one island at the end of a longer land tour. We sell no island-hopping, no diving courses, no liveaboards and no resort comparison. If a Maldives-only holiday is what you want, book it with a Maldives specialist — they know the atolls property by property and we do not.
What follows is still worth reading, because nearly everything that catches out a first-time visitor to the Maldives has nothing to do with who books the trip.
The three trips of ours that reach the Maldives
India's Facets & Maldives — 15 days, from EUR 3,140. Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ranakpur, Udaipur and Mumbai, then days 11 to 15 in the Maldives. This is the only tour in our catalogue that names its Maldives property in advance: Embudu Village Resort in South Malé Atoll, a Superior Beach Bungalow, four nights. A beach bungalow — a room with sand outside the door. Not an overwater villa. There is no overwater villa anywhere in our catalogue, on any trip, at any price.
Our 14-day Sri Lanka tour with a Maldives finish — from EUR 1,220. Dambulla, Sigiriya, Pasikuda, Horton Plains, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, a safari at Yala and Galle, then a flight out of Colombo on day 13 and four nights on a Maldivian beach. Here the resort is chosen when we build the trip, and the itinerary is explicit that the Maldives leg is an optional extra cost that moves with the grade you pick.
The standalone Maldives beach component — 5 days, from EUR 700. Land at Malé, speedboat to the island, four nights, fly home. It exists to be bolted onto the end of an India trip. It is not a holiday on its own.
One thing to budget for on all three: the connecting flight. Our tours do not include international flights. A domestic flight written into an itinerary is included, but Mumbai–Malé and Colombo–Malé are international sectors, and neither is stated as included. Add them to your own sum before you compare prices.

One island, one resort
This is the part most people have not internalised. In the Maldives a resort usually occupies an entire island. You are not choosing a hotel on a coastline with other hotels down the road; you are choosing the only thing on that piece of land. There is no walking into town for dinner, no second restaurant to try, no beach bar next door if the one at your place is dull.
The consequences are blunt. Your food and drink bill is captive — you pay resort prices for four days with no alternative, which is why half board is usually worth taking. And an island is small. Embudu is walkable end to end in well under half an hour. Four nights suits that scale. Ten nights on one small island suits a particular kind of traveller and nobody else, which is another reason we sell it as a finish rather than a holiday.
Seaplane or speedboat, and why it decides your flight time
Resorts near Malé are reached by speedboat. Resorts further out need a seaplane, or a domestic flight to a regional airport followed by a boat. Embudu sits in South Malé Atoll, close enough that the transfer on our India trip is a speedboat straight from the airport jetty.
The detail that ruins arrival days: seaplanes only fly in daylight. They operate from roughly sunrise to late afternoon and they do not fly after dark. If your international flight lands in Malé at 21:00 and your resort is a seaplane resort, you are not reaching it that night. You overnight in Malé or Hulhumalé and fly out the next morning, and you pay for that night and lose a day of your stay.
A speedboat resort has no such constraint. Boats run at night. That is a real argument for a near-Malé island on a short four-night stay.
Two monsoons, and what they actually change
The Maldives has two seasons and they are named after the winds.
- Iruvai, the northeast monsoon — December to April. The dry season. Less rain, lighter winds, calmer water, more sun. December and January are the busiest and most expensive weeks of the year.
- Hulhangu, the southwest monsoon — May to November. The wet season. More rain and more wind, though the rain tends to come in heavy bursts rather than grey all-day drizzle. Rates drop noticeably.
Air temperature barely moves: roughly 25°C at night and 30–31°C in the afternoon all year, with high humidity throughout. What changes is the sky, the wind and the sea state, not the warmth.
Conveniently, the seasons line up. India's good travelling months are roughly October to March, and Sri Lanka's west and south coasts are best December to March. Both overlap the Maldivian dry season, so a trip built around the land portion usually lands in the Maldives at a good time anyway.
In the water
Sea temperature runs 27–30°C year round. You will not need a wetsuit for snorkelling; a rash vest is more about sunburn than cold.
Visibility is the thing that moves with the season. Expect roughly 20–30 metres in the dry months and 10–20 metres in the wet ones, when plankton and run-off cloud the water. That plankton is also why manta rays and whale sharks feed more predictably in the wet season — worse visibility, better odds of seeing something large.
Snorkelling off the house reef is what a four-night beach stay realistically gives you. We do not sell diving courses, certification or dive packages. If you dive, you arrange it directly with the resort's dive centre when you are there.
Resort island or inhabited island
There are two kinds of island and the rules on them differ.
On a resort island, the resort sets the tone. Swimwear is normal. Alcohol is served. It functions as an international resort does anywhere.
On an inhabited island — where Maldivians actually live — national law applies. Cover shoulders and knees away from the beach, and swim in a bikini only at a designated "bikini beach" where one exists. Alcohol is not sold or served on inhabited islands at all, and that includes Malé. Duty-free bottles are taken from you at the airport and returned when you leave.
Our trips put you on a resort island. We do not sell local-island guesthouse stays, and we would not pretend to be the right people to arrange one.
Ramadan
The Maldives is a Muslim country and Ramadan shifts about eleven days earlier each year — it falls in February in 2027 and in late January in 2028.
On a resort island the effect on you is small: service, restaurants and bars run as usual. It is Malé and the inhabited islands that change, where cafés close during daylight hours and everything slows. If you transfer through Malé on Eid, expect queues. Worth knowing, not worth avoiding.
When you should not book the Maldives with us
If you want two weeks in the water, three atolls, a dive course and a considered argument about which resort suits you, that is a specialist's job — and a good one earns their fee on the resort choice alone. We would be guessing.
Book the Maldives with us when it is the last four nights of something else — when you have spent two weeks in Rajasthan or crossed Sri Lanka and want flat days at the end of it. That is the job our Maldives leg does, and it does it well.
If you want a beach finish without the extra international flight, there are closer options we know properly: Marari on the Kerala coast, Goa, or the Andaman Islands. All three are cheaper and all three avoid a separate hop to Malé.
