Travel in Tissamaharama

Tissamaharama sits in Sri Lanka's dry southeast, and on our routes it does one job: it is where the drive south stops for the night. Three of our private Sri Lanka itineraries overnight here. All three give it exactly one night. None of them schedules a single sight in the town itself.

That is worth saying plainly, because Tissamaharama is usually sold as the gateway to Yala — and only two of the three actually drive into the park.

Culture & nature (14 days, from EUR 1,120) arrives on day 7, the day after a free day in Ella, and the itinerary names Tissamaharama as the starting point for the Yala excursion. The jeep safari runs that afternoon: forest, grassland and lagoon, home to leopards, elephants, crocodiles and hundreds of bird species. Day 8 leaves for the Sinharaja rainforest. One detail to check on your quote — the published hotel list for this route shows the night at Yala, in the Oakray Wild, not in Tissamaharama town.

Breathtaking nature & culture (14 days, from EUR 1,220) comes south on day 10 by way of Kataragama, the pilgrimage town where the Buddhist deity Kataragama Deviyo and the Hindu war god Murugan are both worshipped, and which Muslims and the Vedda revere as sacred too. You check in at Tissamaharama and the evening is yours. The park drive is the next morning, day 11, together with Sithulpawwa monastery, rock paintings in the caves around it, and the ruins of Magul Maha Viharaya. Then the road continues to Galle.

The wonderful world of Sri Lanka (13 days, from EUR 750) is the one to read carefully. It reaches Tissamaharama on day 2, also via Kataragama, coming up from the beach at Unawatuna. You check in, and the evening is free. On day 3 the route leaves for Ella. There is no Yala safari on this itinerary at all. If a jeep drive is the reason Tissamaharama is on your shortlist, this is not the trip.

What the three have in common is the shape of the stop. You arrive in the afternoon or evening, you sleep, and you move on the next day. The itineraries promise no walk around the tank, no temple visit in town, no early-morning birding. If you want any of that added, raise it when you enquire rather than assuming it is already there.

The practical picture is the same across all three. Every trip is private and guided — your own guide and driver, no fixed group departures, dates set around you. A German-speaking guide is included, along with hotel accommodation, breakfast, 24-hour availability throughout and a bottle of water on arrival. International flights are not included. Room categories run Standard, Deluxe, Superior and Executive, and there is no five-star tier; the one route that publishes its hotel list uses standard and deluxe rooms. All three are rated easy. The beach or Maldives stay that closes each route is optional at extra cost.

Prices for the three start at EUR 750 for the 13-day route and run to EUR 1,220.
