Travel in Galle

Galle sits on Sri Lanka's south coast, and on these trips it means one thing: a walk inside the fort. The Portuguese founded it in 1588; the Dutch took it over and fortified it from 1649. What the itineraries name is the Dutch church, the museum, and the white lighthouse at the eastern end. Four of our six Sri Lanka routes go there — two close with it, two open with it, and none builds a day around anything else in town.

Two routes finish here. Between culture and jungle (14 days, from EUR 1,380) comes down from two nights at Sinharaja and walks the fort on day 12. It is also the only route that publishes its hotels: two nights in Galle at Pedlar 62, in a standard room. The second of those days is a free beach day, and the itinerary marks that day optional at extra cost — so ask for the night-by-night breakdown on your quote rather than assuming. Breathtaking nature & culture (14 days, from EUR 1,220) arrives on day 11 straight from the Yala jeep safari and leaves the rest of that day free in Galle. The fort walk is day 12, and this is the one route that adds the turtle hatchery at nearby Hikkaduwa, where hatchlings are released and injured turtles nursed. Day 13 is the airport, with four optional nights in the Maldives after it at extra cost.

Two routes start here, and both are short. The wonderful world of Sri Lanka (13 days, from EUR 750) lands at Bandaranaike, runs a short city tour of Colombo, drives south to Galle for the fort walk, and ends the day on the beach at Unawatuna — all on arrival day, after an overnight flight. Sri Lanka's glory (14 days, from EUR 1,050) pairs Negombo's morning fish market with an afternoon stroll through Galle on day 2, then turns inland to Sinharaja on day 3. Neither lists a Galle hotel, and both days are as much driving as fort.

Some things people expect here are not in the programme. No route includes whale watching from Mirissa, and none takes the coastal railway — you travel the south by road, in your own vehicle with your own driver and guide. The two Sri Lanka routes that never reach Galle are Culture & nature and Forests, tea plantations & culture. Beyond the fort walk itself, nothing else in Galle is scheduled: the time around it is yours.

The practical shape is the same on all four. Every trip is private and guided, with a German-speaking guide, 24-hour availability throughout, hotel accommodation, breakfast and a bottle of water on arrival. There are no set departures and no group to join. International flights are not included. Where rooms are published they are standard and deluxe; there is no five-star tier. The four routes through Galle start between EUR 750 and EUR 1,380 per person, and all are sold year-round.
