Travel in Horton Plains
Tailor-made trips in Horton Plains, designed by our team in Delhi and run on the ground by local guides. Horton Plains is a high plateau at 2,000 to 2,300 metres — grassland, cloud forest and marsh above Nuwara Eliya. Three of our six Sri Lanka trips hike here on day five, as a day out from the tea country. Nobody sleeps in the park.

Travel guide
Introduction to Horton Plains
Horton Plains appears on three of our six private Sri Lanka routes, and on all three it falls on day five. Every trip is tailor-made and guided — your own guide and driver, dates set around you, no fixed departures. On these itineraries the plateau is a day out and back from the tea country around Nuwara Eliya. No route sleeps in the park, and none gives it more than a single day.
The plateau sits between 2,000 and 2,300 metres: open grassland, patches of cloud forest, marsh and rock. Two of the three — The wonderful world of Sri Lanka and Culture & nature — walk out to World's End, the escarpment where the ground drops 800 metres, and stop at the 20-metre Baker's Falls on the way back. The third, Forests, tea plantations & culture, hikes the same plateau to a different point: Kirigalpotha, the highest peak in Sri Lanka you are allowed to walk up. Those are two different days out. If you want World's End specifically, check which route you are reading.
The view from World's End is the reason most people come, and it is not guaranteed. Both itineraries that include it say the same thing — the view carries all the way to the sea in clear weather. In cloud you see the drop and little beyond it. Leopards deserve the same honesty: they live on the plateau, the itineraries call them elusive, and seeing one is luck rather than a plan. Sambar deer are the realistic sighting, along with the birds and amphibians the highlands are known for.
The day before matters on one route. Culture & nature climbs Adam's Peak on day four — more than 5,000 steps, started before dawn, to the summit at 2,243 metres for sunrise — then drives on to Nuwara Eliya and hikes Horton Plains the next morning. Two hard days back to back. The 13-day route has a gentler run-up: the two-hour Ella Rock walk and a tea factory. All three trips are graded easy overall, but the plateau day is a full day on foot at altitude on every one of them.
Two of the three name their base. Culture & nature and Forests, tea plantations & culture both give Nuwara Eliya two nights at the Oakray Summer in a standard room, which is where the Horton Plains day starts and ends. The 13-day route lists no hotels, so ask for the night-by-night breakdown on your quote. All three include hotel accommodation, breakfast, a German-speaking guide, 24-hour availability throughout and a bottle of water on arrival. International flights are not included. Rooms are standard and deluxe; there is no five-star tier.
Park entrance fees are not on the included list either, so ask what you pay at the gate when you book. Only breakfast is covered, which is worth knowing on a hiking day. Prices for the three routes run from EUR 750 for the 13-day trip to EUR 1,140. The other three Sri Lanka trips do not come here. One of them hikes the Knuckles Range instead — a different range, a different day.

How many of your trips go to Horton Plains?
Three of our six private Sri Lanka routes, and on each one it is day five. The plateau is a day hike out from the tea country around Nuwara Eliya — you drive up, walk, and come back down to the same hotel. No route stays overnight in the park, and none gives Horton Plains more than a single day.

Do all three walk to World's End?
No. The wonderful world of Sri Lanka and Culture & nature both hike out to World's End and return past the 20-metre Baker's Falls. Forests, tea plantations & culture stays on the same plateau but climbs Kirigalpotha, the highest peak in Sri Lanka you are allowed to walk up, and does not include World's End. If the escarpment is what you are after, check the route before you book.

Will I actually see the view from World's End?
Only in clear weather, and both itineraries say so themselves. The escarpment drops 800 metres and the view carries to the sea on a clear day; in cloud you see the edge and little else. Nothing on our side changes that, and none of the routes builds in a second attempt.

How hard is the hike?
All three trips are graded easy overall, but the plateau day is a full day on foot between 2,000 and 2,300 metres, across grassland, cloud forest, marsh and rock. Culture & nature is the demanding one: it climbs Adam's Peak on day four — over 5,000 steps before dawn to the summit at 2,243 metres — and then hikes Horton Plains the next morning. Tell us when you enquire if you would rather have a rest day between the two.

What is included, and what is not?
All three list hotel accommodation, breakfast, a German-speaking guide, 24-hour availability throughout and a bottle of water on arrival; international flights are not. Park entrance fees are not on the included list either, so ask what you pay at the gate. Only breakfast is covered, which matters on a hiking day — plan your food and water for the plateau. Rooms are standard and deluxe, there is no five-star tier, and the three routes start at EUR 750 for the 13-day trip and run to EUR 1,140.
