Travel in Yala & the South

Yala is the park that two of our Sri Lanka itineraries actually drive into. They describe it the same way each time — forests, grasslands and lagoons, home to leopards, elephants, crocodiles and hundreds of bird species. The route reaches it from Tissamaharama, in the south of the island, and the stop is one night, not a week.

Culture & nature (from EUR 1,120) arrives the day after Ella and runs an afternoon jeep safari on day 7. Breathtaking nature & culture (from EUR 1,220) comes south on day 10 by way of Kataragama — the pilgrimage town revered by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and the Vedda alike — checks into Tissamaharama for the evening, then drives into the park on day 11 before carrying on to Galle. That same day takes in Sithulpawwa monastery, rock paintings in the caves around it, and the ruins of Magul Maha Viharaya: early Buddhist sites in the same corner of the island.

Two other trips get close without going in, and it is worth knowing which is which. Between culture and jungle (from EUR 1,380) runs its afternoon jeep safari at Udawalawe on day 9 instead, in open grassland and forest that has been protected habitat since the Udawalawe Dam was built; the itinerary follows water buffalo, wild boar, mongooses and especially elephants. The wonderful world of Sri Lanka (from EUR 750) overnights in Tissamaharama on day 2, on the road from Kataragama to Ella, but never enters the park. If a leopard drive is the reason you are booking, neither is the itinerary for it.

No sighting is promised on any of them. One drive is one chance, and the itineraries say only that the park is home to these animals. Culture & nature does give a second, earlier chance: the day-5 hike across Horton Plains, at 2,000 to 2,300 metres, lists sambar deer, birds and amphibians and, with luck, a leopard — along with World's End, the 800-metre escarpment, and the 20-metre Baker's Falls on the walk back.

What follows the safari differs. Culture & nature continues to Sinharaja for two nights — the last remaining continuous forest area in Sri Lanka, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — where an early-morning hike on the second day follows a ranger who knows every animal, tree and plant. Humidity, birdsong, monkey calls, insects, and few other tourists. Breathtaking nature & culture goes the other way, from the park to Galle fort and the coast.

The practical shape is the same across all of them. Every trip is private and guided, with a German-speaking guide included, and there are no fixed group departures. International flights are not included. Accommodation runs Standard, Deluxe, Superior and Executive — there is no five-star tier. The beach stay that closes each trip is optional at extra cost, including the four nights in the Maldives at the end of Breathtaking nature & culture.
