Travel in Colombo

Colombo appears on the first page of every Sri Lanka itinerary we sell, and that is largely what it is: the first page. All six routes fly into Colombo and are met at Bandaranaike International Airport. Three of them then spend a few hours in the city. The other three drive straight out.

The three that stop do different things with the time. The wonderful world of Sri Lanka, 13 days from EUR 750, takes a short city tour after landing and continues south the same day — Galle Fort in the afternoon, the beach at Unawatuna by evening. The itinerary does not name what that tour covers, so ask for the detail when you enquire. Forests, tea plantations & culture (14 days, from EUR 1,140) and Breathtaking nature & culture (14 days, from EUR 1,220) use the evening instead: the Gangaramaya Temple, which the itineraries call one of Sri Lanka's most important, and a walk through the Pettah floating market — stalls of local produce, goods and handicrafts along the water.

The three that do not stop say so in their own text. Sri Lanka's glory drives from the airport to a hotel in the fishing village of Negombo. Culture & nature is met at arrivals and driven directly to Kandy. Between culture and jungle suggests exploring the capital on your own if time allows, but names no sight and puts its first night in Negombo — we have left it off this page rather than count a maybe as a visit.

Worth knowing before you plan around it: the airport is not in Colombo. Bandaranaike International sits at Katunayake, about 30 km north of the city and a few minutes from Negombo. That is why the arrival hotel is usually Negombo, and why "Arrival in Colombo" at the top of a day one can mean the airport and nothing more. Only two of the six routes publish a hotel list in advance, and both put the first night in Negombo.

No route comes back. Every Sri Lanka trip in the catalogue ends somewhere else — Negombo for most, and for Breathtaking nature & culture a drive from Galle to the airport and a flight on to the Maldives. There is no Colombo night at the end to catch up on what you missed at the start.

All three routes are private and guided: your own driver and guide from the moment you land, German-speaking, with 24-hour availability throughout. Hotel accommodation, breakfast and a bottle of water on arrival are included. International flights are not. Rooms are standard and deluxe, and there is no five-star tier. All three are rated easy, run year-round, and are not tied to a departure date.

If Colombo itself is the reason you are going — a full day in the city, a night in it — none of these routes has that as written. Every trip is private and built around your own dates, so it can be added. Say so when you enquire rather than assuming it is already there.
