Sri Lanka costs about EUR 58 a day, the Maldives about EUR 140. One has ruins, tea country and leopards; the other has an island you cannot leave. Here is how to pick, and when to do both.
Short answer: if you have ten days or less and you mainly want to stop moving, go to the Maldives. If you want to come home having seen things, go to Sri Lanka. If you have two weeks, do both — Sri Lanka first, the Maldives last. They are about ninety minutes apart by plane and they do completely different jobs.
Here is the detail behind that, with real numbers.
They are not the same kind of trip
Sri Lanka is an island you drive around. Roughly 65,000 square kilometres, and a route that changes hotel every one or two nights: ruins, tea country, a national park, a colonial fort, a beach at the end.
The Maldives is 26 atolls and around 1,200 islands with a combined land area of about 300 square kilometres. You land at Malé, take a speedboat to one island, and stay on that island. There is no touring. That is the product, not a limitation of it.
So "which is better" is the wrong question. The real question is whether you want a holiday with a route or a holiday with a lounger.
Cost: compare per day, not per trip
These are our actual starting prices. Each one covers hotels, breakfast, a guide, bottled water on arrival, and someone reachable 24 hours a day. International flights are not included in any of them.

The Maldives runs at roughly two and a half times the daily rate, and the gap widens once you are there. On a resort island you cannot walk to a cheaper restaurant. Lunch, dinner and every drink come from the one place that sells them. In Sri Lanka a meal off the itinerary costs a few euros.
One honest note on standard. We book real, comfortable hotels, in room categories like Deluxe, Superior and Executive. There is no five-star tier and no overwater villas anywhere in our catalogue. If the Maldives in your head has a glass floor panel over the lagoon, that is a different price bracket from anything we sell. Better to know that before you enquire.
What there is to do
In Sri Lanka, from the routes we actually run:
- Sigiriya, the rock that rises out of the jungle, with a 200-metre summit once completely covered by buildings
- The cave temples at Dambulla — more than 153 depictions of the Buddha, painted across several eras, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Polonnaruwa, the Sinhalese capital that lay buried under jungle until the British rediscovered it in 1820, and Anuradhapura, where the Ruwanwelisaya stupa stands 108 metres high with 344 stone elephants around its base
- Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth, followed by a dance and music performance
- Tea country around Nuwara Eliya — a factory visit, a walk among the bushes, and time to talk to the pickers
- Horton Plains, at 2,000 to 2,300 metres, and the walk to World's End, an 800-metre escarpment with a view to the sea on a clear day
- Ella — the gentle climb up Little Adam's Peak, the view from Lipton's Seat, and the Nine Arches Bridge, 25 metres high and built entirely of brick
- A jeep safari in Yala: leopards, elephants, crocodiles and a lot of birds
- Galle Fort, founded by the Portuguese in 1588 and rebuilt by the Dutch from 1649, plus the turtle hatchery at nearby Hikkaduwa
In the Maldives: swimming, snorkelling, diving, and whatever watersports your resort runs. Days two to four of our five-day Maldives itinerary read "shape your stay entirely according to your own wishes." That is not lazy writing. That is the trip.
When to go, and why the months matter
Sri Lanka has two monsoons pulling in opposite directions. The Maldives has one dry season.
December to March. The window that works for both. Sri Lanka's south and west coasts and the hill country are dry, and the Maldives is in its dry northeast monsoon. If you are combining the two, aim here. It is also the busiest and most expensive.
May to September. The southwest monsoon soaks Sri Lanka's south coast, west coast and hill country. The east coast is dry in exactly these months, which is why our routes that stop at Pasikuda or Nilaveli work better in this half of the year. The Maldives turns wet from May: not constant rain, but shorter sunny spells and more wind.
April, October and November. Inter-monsoon on both sides. Rain is likely either way. Prices are lowest and so is the certainty.
Temperatures move far less than the rain. The Sri Lankan coast sits at 28–31°C almost year-round. Nuwara Eliya is 18–22°C by day and can fall to around 10°C at night, and Horton Plains at dawn is genuinely cold — bring a fleece, because most people don't. The Maldives is 28–31°C with a sea at 27–29°C in every month. What changes there is the weather, not the heat.
Who each one suits
Choose the Maldives if: you have a week or less, you are on a honeymoon, you want to make no decisions for six days, or you know you resent early starts on holiday.
Choose Sri Lanka if: you want variety, you don't mind driving days, and ruins, wildlife, tea estates and a 5:30am safari sound like the point rather than the cost.
The honest downsides. In Sri Lanka the driving is real: Colombo to Dambulla with a stop at the Pinnawela elephant orphanage is a full travel day, and the roads are slower than the distances suggest. In the Maldives you cannot leave. If you are bored by day three, there is nowhere else to be.
The combination trip, and the order it goes in
We run one Sri Lanka route that finishes in the Maldives: Colombo, the Pinnawela elephant orphanage, Dambulla, Sigiriya, a stretch on the beach at Pasikuda, Kandy, the tea plantations at Nuwara Eliya, the pilgrimage town of Kataragama, a Yala safari, Galle and the turtle hatchery at Hikkaduwa — then a flight from Colombo to Malé and four nights on a resort island. The land arrangements start at EUR 1,220. Two things to ask about: the Maldives resort is priced by category on top, and the flight between the two countries is not in that figure either.
There is also a 15-day India and Maldives route at EUR 3,140. It runs Delhi, the Taj Mahal at Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Mumbai, then finishes on a Maldivian island. If India is the half you are unsure about, our month-by-month guide to India covers the timing.
The order is not decoration. Both combinations put the island at the end, because early mornings and long drives are easier before a week of doing nothing and much harder after. Going the other way round means walking off a lounger and into a 6am climb up Sigiriya.
What we don't sell, so you can look elsewhere
Every trip we run is private and guided. There are no scheduled group departures, so there is no group price to compare against, and the guide listed as standard is German-speaking — say so when you enquire if you want English.
The Maldives leg is a beach stay. We do not sell liveaboard diving trips or certification courses. Diving and snorkelling at Pigeon Island, on the Nilaveli beach days, appear as an optional excursion you arrange and pay for locally. Same for a side trip into Trincomalee. If serious diving is the reason you want the Maldives, book it with a dive operator directly.
Deciding in a minute
- Under 10 days: pick one. Sri Lanka to see things, the Maldives to stop.
- 10 to 14 days: Sri Lanka on its own, done properly.
- 14 days or more, and one of you wants a beach: the combination.
- Under EUR 1,000 for land arrangements: Sri Lanka.
- Honeymoon: the Maldives, or the combination if you want both halves.
