Travel guide
Introduction to Nuwara Eliya & Horton Plains
Nuwara Eliya appears on five of our six private Sri Lanka routes. All five are tailor-made and guided — your own guide and driver, on your dates, with no set departures. How much of the place you get varies sharply. Two settle here for two nights. One ends a hiking day here. Two use it as a stop on the way somewhere else.
The tea is the one thing every route does. The highlands around Nuwara Eliya are the centre of Sri Lanka's tea production, and all five itineraries schedule a working tea factory and a walk through the bushes, with time to talk to the pickers. That is the shared core; everything after it varies.
Horton Plains is the reason to stay the night. The plateau sits at 2,000 to 2,300 metres — grassland, cloud forest and marsh — and three routes walk it. The wonderful world of Sri Lanka and Culture & nature go out to World's End, the 800-metre escarpment with a view to the sea in clear weather, and stop at the 20-metre Baker's Falls on the way back. Forests, tea plantations & culture climbs Kirigalpotha instead, described in that itinerary as Sri Lanka's highest accessible peak. Leopards live on the plateau and are rarely seen; sambar deer, birds and amphibians are the realistic sightings.
Two itineraries say plainly what the town itself is for. After the Horton Plains hike the evening is free, and the former British hill station — colonial buildings, pubs — is what there is to do with it. Forests, tea plantations & culture and Culture & nature both give Nuwara Eliya two nights at the Oakray Summer in a standard room. The 13-day route, The wonderful world of Sri Lanka, writes in the same free evening but does not publish a hotel list, so ask for the night-by-night breakdown on your quote.
The other two do not stay. On Breathtaking nature & culture, Nuwara Eliya is a single tea-plantation day between Kandy and the drive south to Tissamaharama. On Between culture and jungle the tea factory sits on a driving day and the night is elsewhere — the day-by-day text names Bandarawela, the hotel list names Ella, so confirm which before you book. Neither of those two describes the Horton Plains walk in its daily text.
No route includes a train. The Kandy to Ella railway runs through this part of the hill country, but it is not booked on any of our Sri Lanka itineraries. You arrive and leave Nuwara Eliya by road, in your own vehicle. If the train matters to you, raise it when you enquire rather than assuming it is already in there.
Two of these routes also climb Adam's Peak from Dalhousie, elsewhere on the itinerary — more than 5,000 steps in the dark to a 2,243-metre summit for sunrise. Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains are gentler, and all five routes are rated easy overall.
All five list the same inclusions: hotel accommodation, breakfast, a German-speaking guide, 24-hour availability throughout, and a bottle of water on arrival. International flights are not included, the only exclusion named. Rooms are standard and deluxe — there is no five-star tier. The five routes run 13 to 14 days and start between EUR 750 and EUR 1,380.

How many nights do the trips spend in Nuwara Eliya?
Two routes list two nights each at the Oakray Summer in a standard room: Forests, tea plantations & culture and Culture & nature. The wonderful world of Sri Lanka and Breathtaking nature & culture describe Nuwara Eliya days but do not publish a hotel list, so ask for the night-by-night breakdown on your quote. Between culture and jungle does not sleep in the town at all — the tea factory there is a stop on a driving day.

Do these trips include the Kandy to Ella train?
No. The railway runs through this part of the hill country and it is what the region is known for, but no Sri Lanka itinerary in our catalogue books a rail leg. You arrive and leave Nuwara Eliya by road, in your own vehicle with your guide and driver. If the train is important to you, say so when you enquire and we will look at whether it can be built in — do not assume it is already there.

Which trips actually hike Horton Plains?
Three of the five. The wonderful world of Sri Lanka and Culture & nature both walk out to World's End and stop at Baker's Falls on the way back. Forests, tea plantations & culture climbs Kirigalpotha instead. The other two routes through Nuwara Eliya do not describe the walk in their day-by-day text, so treat those as tea days rather than hiking days.

How hard is the walking, and what should I bring?
All five routes are rated easy overall, and Horton Plains is the longest day here. The plateau sits at 2,000 to 2,300 metres and the walk starts early, so bring a layer for the morning and shoes you can cover rough ground in. The genuinely hard day on two of these itineraries is Adam's Peak, which is elsewhere on the route: more than 5,000 steps from Dalhousie, climbed in the dark for sunrise.

What is included in the price, and what is not?
All five list hotel accommodation, breakfast, a German-speaking guide, 24-hour availability throughout and a bottle of water on arrival. International flights are not included, and that is the only exclusion the itineraries name. Rooms are standard and deluxe — there is no five-star tier. The five routes through Nuwara Eliya run 13 to 14 days and start between EUR 750 and EUR 1,380.
