Travel in Ella & the Hill Country

Ella appears on four of our private Sri Lanka routes. All four are tailor-made and guided, with no set departures — your own guide and driver, on dates set around you. What Ella does for a trip is straightforward: it is where the driving stops and the walking starts. All four are rated easy overall.

Three walks carry the place. Little Adam's Peak is the gentle one — a short climb that opens onto Ella Rock, Ravana Falls, the surrounding hills and the town below. Two routes schedule it and leave the afternoon or evening free; a third lists it as an option on a day in Ella that is entirely yours. Ella Rock is the longer walk, about two hours, easy to moderate. On the 13-day route it starts early and runs out along the railway line, through tea and spice gardens, villages and waterfalls. The Nine Arches Bridge is 25 metres high and built entirely of brick, and it comes out of the forest without warning. Two routes include it; on Forests, tea plantations & culture it doubles as the start of the Little Adam's Peak hike.

The tea itself is mostly not in Ella. Three of the four visit a working tea factory in the central highlands around Nuwara Eliya, with a walk through the bushes and time to talk to the pickers. Two go to Lipton's Seat, the viewpoint Sir Thomas Lipton used to watch his plantations grow; the itineraries repeat the local claim that seven provinces are visible from it. The 13-day route adds the Dowa Rock Temple and its unfinished Buddha, cut in relief into the rock face.

The days either side matter as much. Three of the four hike Horton Plains, the plateau at 2,000 to 2,300 metres — grassland, cloud forest and marsh. Two walk out to World's End, an 800-metre escarpment with a view to the sea in clear weather, and stop at the 20-metre Baker's Falls on the way back; the third climbs Kirigalpotha instead, the highest peak in Sri Lanka you can walk up. Leopards live there and are rarely seen; sambar deer, birds and amphibians are the realistic sightings. Two routes also climb Adam's Peak from Dalhousie — more than 5,000 steps in the dark to the summit at 2,243 metres, a thousand metres of ascent, alongside pilgrims, for sunrise.

One thing these trips do not include: the Kandy to Ella train. It is the journey the region is known for, and none of the four has it. You reach Ella by road, in your own vehicle. The closest any route comes is the Ella Rock walk, which follows the track out of town on foot. If the train matters to you, raise it when you enquire and we will look at building it in — do not assume it is already there.

Ella sits mid-route every time, between the tea estates and the parks and coast, in both directions: some come up from Tissamaharama or Udawalawe in the south, others down from Nuwara Eliya. Two of the four name their hotels. Forests, tea plantations & culture gives Ella four nights — the one route that settles here rather than passing through — and Culture & nature gives it one. Both use the Oakray Ella Camp in a standard room, and the Oakray Summer up in Nuwara Eliya. The other two do not list hotels, so check that on your quote.

All four list the same inclusions: hotel accommodation, breakfast, a German-speaking guide, 24-hour availability throughout, and a bottle of water on arrival. International flights are not included. Rooms are standard and deluxe — there is no five-star tier. None of the four is tied to a date. Prices start at EUR 750 for the 13-day route and run to EUR 1,140.
