Travel in Udawalawe

Udawalawe appears on two of our six Sri Lanka routes: Sri Lanka's Glory, 14 days from EUR 1,050, and Between culture and jungle, 14 days from EUR 1,380. Both are private and guided, tailor-made, with no fixed departures. Neither settles here. On both, Udawalawe is a single afternoon — a jeep safari, a night nearby, and back on the road the next morning. If you want a park to base yourself in for several days, these two itineraries do not do that.

What both routes schedule is the same drive. The itineraries name four animals: water buffalo, wild boar, mongooses and elephants. Between culture and jungle singles out elephants above the rest and describes the park as open grassland and forest. The habitat is a by-product of engineering — the Udawalawe Dam created the reservoir, and the protected land around it is where the animals settled. Neither route builds in a dawn game drive or a second one.

One difference is worth knowing before you book. Sri Lanka's Glory states that the Udawalawe safari is a shared jeep — you are in the vehicle with other travellers. That is the one shared element on an otherwise private trip; the guide, the driver and the rest of the route are yours alone. Between culture and jungle does not say either way, so ask when you enquire rather than assuming a private vehicle.

Where the stop falls differs on each route. Sri Lanka's Glory puts Udawalawe on day 4, straight after the Sinharaja rainforest hike and directly before Ella. Between culture and jungle puts it on day 9, coming down from the tea factories of the hill country and going on to Sinharaja for two nights. Both routes link the same two things — the rainforest and the tea hills — and Udawalawe is the stop between them, in one direction or the other.

Only one of the two names its accommodation. Between culture and jungle lists one night at the Elephant Trail in a standard room. Sri Lanka's Glory publishes no hotel list at all, so ask for the night-by-night breakdown on your quote. There is no five-star tier on either trip.

Both list the same inclusions: hotel accommodation, breakfast, a German-speaking guide, 24-hour availability throughout, and a bottle of water on arrival. International flights are not included. Neither route is tied to a season or a departure date, and both are rated easy.

Two other Sri Lanka routes go to Yala instead — the larger park, and the one where our itineraries do name leopards. No trip in our catalogue visits both. Choosing Udawalawe means choosing one of these two routes, and taking elephants over the chance of a cat.
