Travel in Negombo

Negombo is where these itineraries begin and end, for one plain reason: it is the town beside Bandaranaike International Airport. Five of our six Sri Lanka trips put a night there. On four of them it is the arrival night, the departure night, or both — a bed near the runway at either end of the flight. Only one route schedules anything in the town itself.

That one is Sri Lanka's glory (14 days, from EUR 1,050). You are met at the airport and taken to a hotel in Negombo on day 1, and day 2 stays put: the morning fish market, which the itinerary calls the famous one, the beach with its catamarans, and the buildings left from the Portuguese and Dutch periods. The same day then continues south to Galle and its fort, established by the Portuguese in 1588 and expanded by the Dutch from 1649. The route returns to Negombo on day 13 for a final night, describing the lagoon and its lobster, prawn and crab fishing, and leaving the day free. No hotel list is published for this trip, so ask for the night-by-night breakdown.

Forests, tea plantations & culture (14 days, from EUR 1,140) gives Negombo the most nights of any route — three, all at the Ruvisha Hotel in a standard room. One on arrival, two at the end. Worth knowing: the day-1 text says only Colombo, while the hotel list is where the night actually is. The two closing nights are headed "The beach of Negombo" and carry no programme.

The wonderful world of Sri Lanka (13 days, from EUR 750) drives to Negombo on day 12, after Anuradhapura, and flies home on day 13. The itinerary describes the town — the catamarans, the lagoon, the colonial-era buildings — then states in its own words that the day is not included in the tour price. Raise it when you enquire rather than assuming.

Culture & nature (14 days, from EUR 1,120) ends with one night at the Ruvisha Hotel before the day-14 airport transfer. Its beach block earlier in the trip offers Negombo as one of four bases, alongside Bentota, Balapitya and Mahawaskaduwa, and marks that stay optional at extra cost — while the hotel list puts those three beach nights in Galle.

Between culture and jungle (14 days, from EUR 1,380) never says Negombo in its itinerary at all; day 1 reads only "transferred to your hotel". The hotel overview puts that first night at the Ruvisha Hotel in Negombo, standard room, before heading inland to Dambulla.

The sixth trip, Breathtaking nature & culture (from EUR 1,220), is not listed here: no hotel list, no mention of the town, and it flies to the Maldives on day 13 instead of returning to the coast.

So Negombo is the airport town on these routes, not a stop to build a trip around. One morning of scheduled sightseeing exists across the range, and it is on Sri Lanka's glory.

Every trip is private and guided, with a German-speaking guide included and no fixed group departures. Hotel accommodation, breakfast, 24-hour availability and a bottle of water on arrival are included; international flights are not. Rooms in Negombo are standard on every trip that names one — there is no five-star tier in the range.
