Travel in Sigiriya & Cultural Triangle

Four of our Sri Lanka itineraries run through the Cultural Triangle, and they give it very different amounts of time. The wonderful world of Sri Lanka (13 days, from EUR 750) spends four consecutive days there — Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, one site a day, on days eight to eleven. Between culture and jungle (14 days, from EUR 1,380) opens with it, days two to four. Breathtaking nature & culture (14 days, from EUR 1,220) gives it two days and then leaves for the east coast. Sri Lanka's glory (14 days, from EUR 1,050) saves it for the end and puts Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa together on a single day. The cheapest of the four gives the region the most room.

The Dambulla cave temples are on all four. They were a king's refuge first; after he took his throne back he had them painted, and his successors kept adding to them. Under the rock overhang now are more than 153 depictions of the Buddha and painted walls from several periods. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and on every one of these itineraries it is the first stop in the region.

Sigiriya is on all four as well. The gneiss rock lifts straight out of the jungle, and its 200-metre summit was once built over entirely. The entrance halfway up was flanked by lion's paws, which is where the name Lion Rock comes from. The day takes in the water gardens at the base, the frescoes, the mirror wall with the graffiti early visitors left on it, and the view over the surrounding country from the top. Polonnaruwa is on three of the four. The former Sinhalese capital lay under jungle until the British came across it in 1820. Its irrigation system and artificial reservoir kept rice growing through the dry season, and the circular Vatadage once housed the Buddha's tooth relic. What stands now is the ruined royal palace, large stupas, spread-out temple and monastery complexes and a number of Buddha statues. Breathtaking nature & culture is the one that skips it, turning east to the beach at Pasikuda instead.

Anuradhapura is on one itinerary only — The wonderful world of Sri Lanka, day eleven. It was the political and religious centre of the island for roughly 1,400 years, founded beside the Sri Maha Bodhi tree, and it is still a pilgrimage destination. The Isurumuniya temple sits among grey granite boulders and once served as a religious school for children; the reliefs of bathing elephants are by the pond beside it. The Ruwanwelisaya dagoba, on the Mahavihara monastery grounds, is 108 metres high and 2,090 metres around, with 344 black elephants at its base.

No jeep safari is scheduled inside the triangle. The wildlife days sit elsewhere on these routes — Udawalawe, Sinharaja, Yala — and the one animal stop near the region is the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, on the drive to Dambulla on Breathtaking nature & culture. Between culture and jungle is the only one of the four with a published hotel list: three nights at the Sungreen in Dambulla, in a Deluxe room, before the route moves on to the Knuckles range.

Prices for these four start at EUR 750 and reach EUR 1,380. Hotel accommodation, breakfast, a German-speaking guide, a bottle of water on arrival and someone reachable around the clock are included; international flights are not.
