Travel in Agra

Agra sits on the Yamuna about 230 kilometres south of Delhi, roughly four hours by road, and about the same again west to Jaipur. That position explains how our trips use it. Ten of our fifteen India tours stop here, and on most of them Agra is a single night between two other places: you arrive in the afternoon, you see the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, and you drive on. It is a stopover, not a stay, and no itinerary is built around settling in here for a few days.

All ten include the same pair — the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. The Taj is closed on Fridays, as the itineraries state. Because our trips carry no fixed dates, the team routes around that when your trip is put together. The exception is Golden Triangle & Colors of India, the Holi trip, and the only tour in the programme with fixed dates; its Taj morning is fixed with them, so check it against the calendar when you enquire.

Timing at the Taj varies more than people expect, and it is written into the itinerary, not decided on the day. Five tours put you there at sunrise: Golden Triangle & Colors of India, Colourful Rajasthan & Himalayas, North India – landscapes and culture, Rajasthan – The Land of Kings, and Royal Rajasthan & Varanasi. The other five say only that the marble reads differently at every hour, which means a normal daytime visit. If sunrise matters, choose one of those five, or raise it before you book.

Two tours also show you the Taj from the far bank at sunset. Royal Rajasthan & Varanasi names the garden, Mehtab Bagh, straight across the river; Colourful Rajasthan & Himalayas has the same view without naming it. On both, the sunset comes the evening before the sunrise visit, so you see the building twice from two sides. No other trip does.

Agra Fort runs alongside the Taj on all ten, and several itineraries tell the two as one story: Shah Jahan built the mausoleum for his wife, then spent his last years watching it from a distance from his confinement inside the fort. Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's abandoned capital forty kilometres west, is on five — India – from North to South, North India – landscapes and culture, Rajasthan – The Land of Kings, Royal Rajasthan & Varanasi and India's facets & Maldives — normally on the way in or out, not as a separate excursion. Five trips also put you in an Indian home here: four as an afternoon cooking demonstration with a local family followed by dinner, and on Golden Triangle & Colors of India as dinner at the home of a local friend the evening you arrive.

Two things Agra is known for appear on no itinerary of ours: Itimad-ud-Daulah, the small marble tomb usually called the Baby Taj, and Akbar's tomb at Sikandra. The city itself is barely touched — only On the trails of the Maharajas walks you through Agra's old town and bazaars. No Agra hotel is named in any itinerary. You choose a room tier — Standard, Deluxe, Superior or Executive — and the property is confirmed when the trip is built. There is no five-star or luxury tier.

Two tours give Agra two nights instead of one: Colourful Rajasthan & Himalayas and the 21-day North India – landscapes and culture. At the other end, The magic of Rajasthan gives it none. The Taj and the fort happen on the final morning, driving up from Dholpur, and you carry on to Delhi the same day for a farewell dinner and a flight home after midnight. At EUR 1000 for ten days it is the cheapest route to the Taj we sell, and the most compressed.

You reach Agra by road every time; no itinerary flies there. Only Royal Rajasthan & Varanasi leaves differently, on the night train to Varanasi after the cooking demonstration. One gap worth raising: Golden Triangle & Spirituality moves you from Agra to Varanasi overnight without saying how, though it does flag the Varanasi–Delhi flight later on.
