Travel in Udaipur

Five of our fifteen India tours reach Udaipur. That number tells you what this page is: Udaipur is a stop inside a longer Rajasthan or North India route, never a trip on its own. We do not sell a Udaipur-only holiday.

Four of the five give you two nights and one full sightseeing day. That day is close to identical across them, so plan for it rather than for something bespoke: the old town lanes and bazaars on foot, the Jagdish Temple, the City Palace on the hilly shore of Lake Pichola, the garden Saheliyon Ki Bari, and a boat ride on the lake late in the day. The boat is written into the itineraries as "depending on water levels". Pichola is a man-made lake fed by the monsoon. After a weak monsoon, or in the hot months of April to June before the next one, the water can be too low and the boat may not run. From the boat you see Jag Mandir and Jag Niwas, the two palaces built on islands in the lake. You see them from the water and go inside neither. Jag Niwas is now a five-star hotel, and our room tiers stop at Standard, Deluxe, Superior and Executive. If a night in the Lake Palace is the reason you want Udaipur, we are the wrong operator for that booking.

Several things Udaipur is known for are in none of our itineraries. The fort at Kumbhalgarh with its long perimeter wall, Chittorgarh, the Monsoon Palace at Sajjangarh for sunset, the evening dance performance at Bagore ki Haveli, the temples at Eklingji and Nagda, the Vintage Car Museum, the Crystal Gallery inside the City Palace: none of them appear on any route we sell. What is included is the day above, and it is slower than Jaipur or Jodhpur.

How you arrive and leave differs by tour. Rajasthan - The Land of Kings (14 days, from EUR 1,800) drives in from Jodhpur on day 12 with a stop at the Jain temple at Ranakpur, gives you two nights, then flies you Udaipur to Delhi on day 14. That domestic flight is written into the itinerary, so it is included. On the trails of the Maharajas (15 days, from EUR 1,840) comes in by road from Bundi on day 8, spends day 9 in the city, then leaves for Ranakpur, the narrow-gauge train from Phulad to Kamli Ghat, and the palace hotel at Deogarh. India's facets and Maldives (15 days, from EUR 3,140) reaches Udaipur on days 7 and 8 from Jodhpur via Ranakpur, staying at Fateh Niwas in a Superior room with balcony, before Mumbai and four nights at Embudu Village in the Maldives. North India - landscapes and culture (21 days, from EUR 2,300) is the odd one: Udaipur comes early, on days 3 and 4, driven up from Ahmedabad past the Adalaj stepwell and the Akshardham temple at Gandhinagar, which is closed on Mondays. The fifth is different again. Golden Triangle and Colors of India (7 days, from EUR 1,515) is built around Holi, so it runs on the date Holi falls in March rather than on dates you choose. Udaipur is the end of that trip: in on day 6, a guided City Palace visit and a sunset boat ride on day 7, then the airport. Its hotel list shows one night at Amet Haveli in a lake-facing suite while the day text reads as a departure the following morning, so ask us to confirm the night count for your dates before you book.
