Travel in Pondicherry

Pondicherry — Puducherry on the road signs, and a Union Territory rather than part of the Tamil Nadu that surrounds it — appears in two of our fifteen India tours. In both it is a one-night stop. That is the honest shape of this page. If you are picturing a slow week in a French colonial town, coffee in the morning and the sea in the evening, neither of our itineraries does that, and a trip built around the town would serve you better than one that drives through it.

Here is what the two tours actually do. On South India – Exotic World, eleven days from EUR 1,570, Pondicherry is day 3. Auroville sits on the road in, so you stop at the planned township before you reach the town. Then the ashram of Sri Aurobindo, the French Quarter, and a walk on the seafront promenade to close the day. Next morning you are gone: day 4 runs to the Airavateswarar Temple at Darasuram, the Brihadishvara Temple at Tanjore, and on into Chettinad — roughly 270 kilometres with three stops folded into it. It is a long day and it starts early.

On The diversity of South India, twenty-five days from EUR 2,860, Pondicherry is day 4 and the shape is the same: Auroville on the way, the ashram, the French Quarter grid, the promenade at dusk. You arrive from Mahabalipuram, about 95 kilometres down the coast road, after two nights on the beach there. This tour names the hotel — Atithi TGI Grand, Executive Room, one night. Day 5 turns inland to Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Kumbakonam. The eleven-day tour does not name its Pondicherry hotel in the itinerary; we confirm it in your quote.

Now what neither tour includes. There is no booked entry to the Matrimandir at Auroville. Both itineraries name Auroville and both stop there, but the inner chamber is separate, limited and booked in advance, and it is not written into either day. Tell us before you book if it matters; do not assume it is coming. There is no beach day either. The promenade both itineraries mention is a paved seafront walk behind a rock breakwater — good at six in the evening when Beach Road closes to cars, and no place to swim. The sand is further out at Serenity and Paradise Beach, and no day in either itinerary makes room for it. For beach time in the south we sell Marari in Kerala and Goa as add-on modules. Pondicherry has no equivalent, and we do not run a Pondicherry-only trip.

Thirteen of our fifteen India tours never come here at all. The Golden Triangle and Rajasthan routes run some 2,000 kilometres to the north and touch nothing on the Coromandel Coast. If Pondicherry is on your list, you are buying a South India itinerary, and that choice comes before every other one.

Both tours are private and guided, as everything we sell is. No fixed departure dates, a German-speaking guide with you throughout, 24-hour contact for the whole trip. What we do not have is a five-star tier — rooms run Standard, Deluxe, Superior and Executive, and Executive is the top of it. Breakfast is included; the French Quarter's restaurants are yours to find and pay for, which for one evening is no hardship. One local quirk worth knowing: as a Union Territory Pondicherry sets its own alcohol duty, so wine and spirits cost noticeably less here than a few kilometres away in Tamil Nadu.

Timing follows the rest of the Tamil coast. The northeast monsoon arrives in October and is heaviest through November. December to March is dry and cooler, and that is when both of these tours run best; April to June is hot and humid on the coast.
