Travel in Mahabalipuram

Mahabalipuram sits on the Coromandel Coast about 55 kilometres south of Chennai. Of the fifteen India tours we sell, two go there. That is the honest starting point for this page: if you are looking at the Golden Triangle, Rajasthan, Kerala or anything in the north, Mahabalipuram is not on those itineraries, and we would rather you knew that now than after you paid a deposit.

The two that do go are both South India routes, and they treat the place very differently.

The diversity of South India runs 25 days from EUR 2860. You fly into Chennai, sleep one night there, and day two covers the city — St George's Fort, St Thomas Basilica, the Kapaleeshwara Temple with its 37-metre gopuram, Marina Beach — before the drive down the coast. Two nights follow at the Ideal Beach Resort in a garden-view room. Day three is the reason this page exists. The morning goes to the monuments, on the UNESCO list since 1985, and the afternoon is written into the itinerary as your own: beach, or the town on your own feet. Day four is titled "From Mahabalipuram to Pondicherry" and passes Auroville and the Sri Aurobindo ashram on the way south.

South India – Exotic World runs 11 days from EUR 1570 and gives Mahabalipuram part of a single day. Day two of that itinerary covers Chennai and Mahabalipuram together: the same colonial buildings and the Kapaleeshwara Temple, plus a morning visit to the temple complex. By day three you are on the road to Pondicherry. It is a real visit rather than a photo stop, but it is a few hours, not a day and a half, and the itinerary names no hotel here. If the stone carvings are a reason you are coming to India, the 25-day tour is the one that gives them room.

Both itineraries describe the monuments by type rather than one by one: the coastal temple, the monolithic temples, the rock-cut cave temples. On the ground that means the temple standing on the sand at the water's edge, the shrines carved whole out of single boulders, and the halls cut back into the granite ridge. Your guide covers the main group. Neither itinerary promises a named monument, so if there is one you have read about and will be disappointed to miss, say so when you enquire and the morning gets built around it.

Some things are not here at all. Kanchipuram, the silk and temple city inland, appears in no India itinerary we sell. Travellers often assume it pairs with Mahabalipuram; in our programme it does not. Nor does the Tiger Cave, the crocodile bank on the coast road, or a visit to one of the stone-carving yards still cutting granite in the town. None of that is written into either tour. And this is not a beach holiday: the Ideal Beach Resort is two nights on a moving route, not a week by the sea. If a week by the sea is what you want, Goa or Marari at the end of a longer trip is the honest answer, and even those days come with no vehicle and no guide.

One practical note about the free afternoon on day three. The Goa beach days spell out in writing that there is no vehicle and no tour guide. The Mahabalipuram afternoon does not say either way, so if having the car and the guide on hand matters to you, settle it before you book rather than on the day.

Both trips are private and guided, with a German-speaking guide and 24-hour contact throughout. There are no fixed departure dates and no group to join.
