Travel in Dholpur & the Chambal River

Dholpur appears on exactly one of our fifteen India trips, and that is the first thing worth knowing. The magic of Rajasthan — listed at ten days, from EUR 1,000 — spends days eight and nine here, two nights, between the tiger parks and Agra. Nothing else in the catalogue comes near the place.

Five of our India trips include both Ranthambhore and Agra. Only two run them in that order, park first and Agra after: this one, and Royal Rajasthan & Varanasi, which fills the same gap with the bird sanctuary at Bharatpur and the abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri, then takes a night train on to Varanasi. The other three see Agra before the tiger park. Dholpur is not one option among several. It is one route, or none.

The stop lands after two hard days of game drives. Day six is Ranthambhore fort on its 200-metre hill; day seven is two shared safaris, morning and afternoon, in a jeep for up to six people or an open canter bus for up to twenty, depending on availability. Day three was Sariska, also shared. Dholpur is the opposite kind of day. You arrive by road — no airport, no train on this stretch, the whole route in your own vehicle with your guide. Day eight is deliberately slow: rural Rajasthan of the sort the main road skips, and a night at the Heritage Hotel Raj Niwas Palace, a former palace with a garden. That is the only hotel named anywhere in this itinerary. Every other night reads simply "your hotel", so ask for the night-by-night list when you enquire.

Day nine is the Chambal. The boat goes out early, often into mist. This is a river sanctuary, not a jungle. What lives here is the gharial, the narrow-snouted fish-eating crocodile, plus the Ganges river dolphin, freshwater turtles and a long list of birds. The itinerary calls them residents of the reserve, which is what they are. It does not promise you will see them, and nor will we; the dolphin especially is easy to miss. The safari also carries a condition written into the itinerary itself: water levels permitting. In a dry year, or late in the season, the boat may not run at all. If the Chambal is your reason for booking, say so at enquiry, so we can tell you what the river is doing at your dates rather than you finding out on the morning.

The rest of day nine is on land: Shergarh Fort, the Chobra Mahadev and Machkund temples, and Talab-e-Shahi, a palace on a lake outside town, built as a hunting lodge for Shah Jahan, the emperor who built the Taj Mahal, and visited now mostly for the birds on the water.

Then you leave, and day ten is long. Out of Dholpur early, Agra for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, then on to Delhi, a shopping mall, a day room near the airport and a farewell dinner, with the flight home after midnight. The itinerary carries an eleventh entry only for landing at home. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, and it falls the day after Dholpur, so your start date decides whether you get it. Check that before you book flights.

What this is not: a base, a beach, or a week. It is a two-night pause with one boat trip in it, on a route whose weight sits in Delhi, Jaipur, Ranthambhore and Agra. Nobody should book it for Dholpur alone. Book it for Rajasthan, and take these two days as the ones where nothing is crowded. Hotels and breakfast are included, international flights are not, and rooms run standard through executive — there is no five-star tier, and the palace is a heritage property, not a graded luxury one.
