Travel in Ahmedabad

You land, you spend two nights, you drive north into Rajasthan, and you do not come back. So if you found this page hoping for a Gujarat holiday, that is the honest headline first: this is a stopover, not a stay.

Here is the shape of it. Your own international flight lands at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in the early morning. That flight is not in the price, on this tour or any other we sell; the meet at arrivals and the transfer are. The room at The House of MG, a converted merchant's house in the old city, is held so you can check in at dawn and sleep. Nothing is scheduled for the rest of that day. No guide, no vehicle, no programme — you are jet-lagged and the day is yours.

The one working day starts early. The Heritage Walk sets off around 7:30 am from the Swaminarayan Temple and finishes at the Jama Masjid around 10:30 — three hours on foot through the pols, the walled residential lanes that made this the first Indian city inscribed as a World Heritage City. After that, by car: the Rani Rupmati Masjid for its minarets and carved galleries; the Sidi Saiyed Masjid for the stone lattice windows with their free-form Tree of Life; the Sabarmati Ashram, where Gandhi lived and organised from 1915; and the Hathee Singh temple, Jain, marble, carved to the point of obsession. The Calico Textile Museum closes on Wednesdays and controls admission tightly. If the textiles are the reason you want Ahmedabad at all, say so when you enquire, so the day is arranged around the museum rather than the other way round.

On the third morning you leave by road for Udaipur. Two stops are written into that drive: the Adalaj stepwell, an octagonal shaft descending five storeys where Hindu and Islamic carving meet, and the Akshardham temple at Gandhinagar, closed Mondays. It is a long day in the car and it ends in Rajasthan. From there the tour runs Udaipur, Ranakpur, Deogarh, the narrow-gauge train from Kamblighat to Phulad, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, the Shekhawati havelis, Jaipur, Agra with the Taj Mahal (closed Fridays), then Delhi, Rishikesh and Haridwar. Ahmedabad is the front door to all of that, and nothing more.

Now the part that costs us bookings and saves us complaints. Gujarat, the state, is not on this itinerary. No Rann of Kutch and no white desert. No Gir National Park and no Asiatic lions. No Modhera sun temple, no Champaner, no Somnath, no Dwarka. Two nights in one city is what exists. Every trip we sell is private and tailor-made, so a longer Gujarat routing can be quoted — but it would be drawn from scratch for you, not lifted off a page, and it is not something we run week in, week out.

Two practical facts surprise people. Gujarat is dry: no bar in the hotel, no wine list at dinner, and a visitor's liquor permit is your own errand. And the heat is real. If Rajasthan is what you actually want and three weeks is more than you have, start with Rajasthan or the Golden Triangle instead — but be clear that neither of those routes passes through Ahmedabad. And if you are still deciding whether India is the trip at all, this is worth reading first.
