Travel in Bandipur

Bandipur is a stop on the drive west, not a base. The town sits on a narrow ridge at 1,000 metres, on the road that runs from the Kathmandu valley to Pokhara, and our itineraries treat it exactly that way — you arrive in the afternoon and you leave the next morning, or the one after. Three of our six Nepal trips stop here. Three do not.

The afternoon is unscheduled. Nothing in Bandipur is ticketed and no guided sightseeing is listed: the day notes say relax in the mountain scenery, or walk the town — narrow lanes, traditional wooden houses, and on Impressions of Nepal the local market. Once the drive is done, that is the whole of the arrival day.

Nights differ, and the difference is the reason to pick one route over another. Impressions of Nepal – culture and nature (17 days, from EUR 1,640) and Majestic Himalayas (from EUR 1,640) give one night each. Temples, shrines & Himalayas (14 days, from EUR 1,350) gives two, and the extra day is a real one — a short, easy hike through green hills, fields and rice terraces to the village of Ramkot, snow peaks in the distance, then back to Bandipur with the rest of the day free.

On the two one-night routes the morning starts early: a hike up to the Bandipur viewpoint for sunrise over the surrounding peaks, then the drive on to Pokhara. That sunrise walk is the only scheduled activity in Bandipur on those two itineraries.

The drive in counts as part of the stop. Impressions of Nepal comes from Dhulikhel, Majestic Himalayas from Nagarkot, and Temples, shrines & Himalayas from the Naydo monastery at Pharping, where you can join the monks for the 5 a.m. puja before setting off. Two of the three follow the Trishuli River, where an easy white-water rafting trip is offered as an option at extra cost — it is not in the price. Majestic Himalayas and Temples, shrines & Himalayas also stop at a village along the way, and the Temples route crosses the narrow suspension bridges that link the hill settlements to each other.

What Bandipur is not is a trekking start. No walk in our catalogue begins here. The Annapurna treks all set off from Pokhara, the next stop on every one of these routes, and Ramkot is a morning through farmland rather than a mountain day. All three trips that stop here are private and guided — we run no group departures — and all three include hotel accommodation, breakfast, a bottle of water on arrival and someone reachable 24 hours a day for the length of the trip. International flights are not included, and there is no five-star tier.
