Travel in Annapurna

Tailor-made trips in Annapurna, designed by our team in Delhi and run on the ground by local guides. Annapurna is where the walking happens on our Nepal trips. Four of the six itineraries trek here — three do the Poon Hill loop, one carries on eleven stages to Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m. None of them walks the full Annapurna Circuit.

Why Annapurna

One of the regions we know best

We've spent years travelling across Annapurna in every season. The trips below are built around the routes that work — the quiet ones, the beautiful ones, the ones with great food at the end of the day.

If none of them quite fit, get in touch. We'll happily build you a private version, shaped around your interests, fitness and pace.

Introduction to Annapurna

Annapurna is a massif, not a town. On our Nepal trips it means the trekking days — five to eleven walking stages, depending on the route. Four of our six Nepal itineraries go in on foot; the other two look at it from the Pokhara side and never enter the conservation area. Every trip is private and guided, run on your own dates. There are no fixed departures.

Three of the four walk the Poon Hill route. Culture and Himalayan Hiking and Trekking Tour Through Nepal start at Nayapul at 1,070 m and run five stages — up the Modi and Bhurundi river valleys through bamboo forest and waterfalls to Tikhedhunga at 1,495 m or Ulleri at 2,050 m, then a steady climb to Ghorepani at 2,850 m, a pre-dawn start for sunrise on Poon Hill at 3,210 m, and down through Tadapani at 2,590 m and Ghandruk at 1,940 m to Nayapul again. Impressions of Nepal covers the same ground the other way round in six stages, from Kande at 1,700 m over the Australian Camp viewpoint at 2,200 m. Rhododendron and oak forest, terraced fields, suspension bridges, hill villages.

Majestic Himalayas is the long one, and the only route in the catalogue that reaches Annapurna Base Camp. Eleven stages: over Poon Hill like the others, with a stop at the Gurung Hill viewpoint at about 3,125 m, then north up the Modi Khola to Chomrong at 2,200 m, Dovan at 2,500 m, Deurali at 3,200 m and Machapuchare Base Camp at 3,700 m. Base Camp at 4,130 m is an afternoon climb from there — you go up for the light on the surrounding peaks and come back down to sleep at 3,700 m. Two things to know before committing. Conservation rules cap the beds available this high, so from Dovan onward several nights are in a shared room. And the last stretch up to Deurali is a rough track rather than a path after winter landslides.

Only Majestic Himalayas gives distances. Its stages run from about 5 km in four hours to 15 km in six, with 11 to 13 km over six or seven hours being typical, and one day that drops about 1,350 m. Impressions of Nepal lists 4 to 10 km a stage over five or six hours. The other two describe the same route without the numbers.

The World of Nepal and Temples, Shrines & Himalayas do not trek. They see the massif from Pokhara: Sarangkot at about 1,592 m at around 5 a.m., where Dhaulagiri and Annapurna come up in the first light, and the view from the Bindhyabasini Temple on its hill above town. Temples, Shrines & Himalayas adds the hour uphill to the Shanti Stupa at about 1,115 m, which faces the snow line in good weather.

No trip here walks the full Annapurna Circuit. Two of our itineraries name the circuit when describing Pokhara, and Pokhara genuinely is where people set off on it, but what we run is the Poon Hill loop and the route to Base Camp. Tell us if the circuit is what you are after. The four trekking trips start at EUR 1,575 for the eleven-day Trekking Tour Through Nepal and run to EUR 1,760 for the fourteen-day Culture and Himalayan Hiking.

Which Annapurna treks do you actually run?

Which Annapurna treks do you actually run?

Two routes, across four trips. Three trips walk the Poon Hill loop — five stages from Nayapul at 1,070 m on Culture and Himalayan Hiking and on Trekking Tour Through Nepal, six stages the other way round from Kande at 1,700 m on Impressions of Nepal. All three top out on Poon Hill at 3,210 m for sunrise and come back down. The fourth, Majestic Himalayas, crosses Poon Hill and then keeps going north for eleven stages to Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m.

Do you offer the full Annapurna Circuit?

Do you offer the full Annapurna Circuit?

No. Two of our itineraries mention the Annapurna Circuit when describing Pokhara, and Pokhara really is where people set off on it, but none of the six walks it. What we run is the Poon Hill loop and the route up to Annapurna Base Camp. If the circuit is what you came for, say so when you enquire and we will tell you plainly what we can and cannot build.

How hard is the walking, and how high does it go?

How hard is the walking, and how high does it go?

The Poon Hill routes are five or six days on foot with a high point of 3,210 m, on made paths through forest and villages. Majestic Himalayas is a different proposition: eleven consecutive walking days, stages of roughly 5 to 15 km taking three to seven hours, a high point of 4,130 m and one day that descends about 1,350 m. Our catalogue rates every Nepal trip easy, which fits the Poon Hill loop far better than it fits the Base Camp route. The itinerary also notes that the stretch up to Deurali at 3,200 m is a rough track rather than a path after winter landslides, and asks for care there.

Where do you sleep on the trek?

Where do you sleep on the trek?

The itineraries name the village you stop in each night — Tikhedhunga or Ulleri, Ghorepani, Tadapani and Ghandruk on the Poon Hill routes; Chomrong, Dovan, Deurali and Machapuchare Base Camp on the Base Camp route — and list accommodation and breakfast as included. They do not name the properties, so ask for the night-by-night detail on your quote. On Majestic Himalayas the nights from Dovan at 2,500 m onward are in a shared room, because conservation rules cap the beds available at that altitude; it is stated in the itinerary rather than sprung on you at the door. You do not overnight at Annapurna Base Camp itself — you walk up from Machapuchare Base Camp at 3,700 m in the afternoon and come back down to sleep. Meals beyond breakfast are not listed as included.

What is included, and what does an Annapurna trek cost?

What is included, and what does an Annapurna trek cost?

From-prices for the four run from EUR 1,575 for the eleven-day Trekking Tour Through Nepal to EUR 1,760 for the fourteen-day Culture and Himalayan Hiking. All four include accommodation, breakfast, a bottle of water on arrival and someone reachable 24 hours a day; rooms are Standard through Executive, with no five-star tier anywhere in our catalogue. Three of the four also include a German-speaking guide, while Majestic Himalayas lists that guide as not included, so check the trip page if the language matters to you. International flights are not included, and no domestic flight appears in any of our Nepal itineraries — Kathmandu to Pokhara to the trailhead is all by road.
