Tag 2: Bhutan's unique capital

Bhutan's capital, Thimphu, presents a tranquil atmosphere, where even traffic lights are nowhere to be found and, at the request of the population, traffic is still directed by police officers – the happiness and well-being of the citizens is paramount in this small kingdom. The King's Memorial Chorten, built entirely in the traditional Bhutanese style, symbolizes world peace and prosperity. Together with the collection of priceless manuscripts in the National Library and a visit to the Zorig Chusum Institute (also known as the Painting School), where students are trained in 13 traditional Bhutanese arts and crafts over a six-year period, you will gain a profound insight into the cultural life of this small kingdom.

The natural beauty can be enjoyed in the afternoon on a walk to the Khamusm Yulley Namggyal Chorten – the idyllic path leads gently to moderately uphill, across a suspension bridge, through rice paddies and forest to the hilltop pagoda, which overlooks the valley with a magnificent view.

Small villages nestled on the slopes of the Punakha Valley offer a glimpse into rural Bhutan, while visits to a village school and an orchard in Nobgang provide profound insights into a down-to-earth and traditional way of life. The surrounding mountains form a magical backdrop for Punakha Dzong – at the confluence of two rivers, this imposing fortress-monastery, also known as the "Palace of Great Bliss," is an outstanding example of Bhutanese monastic architecture. Originally built in 1637 as a fortress against the Tibetans, it served as the country's religious and administrative center in the past and, after extensive restoration, now shines in its former glory.
