The Golden Triangle and the Spiritual Heart of India

India’s turbulent history, colorful cultures, and everyday spirituality combine with the achievements of modernity to create a kaleidoscope of diverse ways of life. In the contrasting metropolis of Delhi, life pulses between old and new, while in the magnificent forts and palaces of Jaipur and Agra, you immerse yourself in the rich heritage of former rulers and let the royal Taj Mahal tell the story of an immortal love. In Varanasi, the spiritual heart of India beats to a millennia-old rhythm, offering insights into the almost tangible mystical atmosphere of one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, immersed in the ever-present cycle of becoming, being, and passing away.

Tag 2: Where Old and New Meet

The capital metropolis of Delhi is a melting pot of diverse Indian cultures, creating a fascinating blend of traditional heritage and modern life. The Red Fort exudes an aura of worldly power and strength even from the outside, while the Jama Masjid, India’s largest mosque, can accommodate up to 20,000 worshippers for communal prayer, reflecting divine power. The bustling activity in the streets of the Old City immerses you in an overwhelming array of traditional handicrafts and modern everyday items, colorful clothing, and a variety of spices, teas, and street food to satisfy every craving. From there, you continue to India Gate, built in memory of those who fell in World War I, and drive through the government district. You are also welcomed by the Sikh religion at its largest temple in Delhi, the Bangla Sahib Gurudwara. A final stroll through Lodhi Garden allows you to explore not only the enchanting green park landscape but also some of Delhi’s oldest tombs.

Tag 3: Life in Jaipur

Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, is shaped by both history and modernity, where countless cars, tuk-tuks, and motorcycles navigate the streets and squares alongside bicycle rickshaws, camel carts, and elephants, weaving through historic buildings, colorful market stalls, and shops. In the evening, you can experience the vibrant world of Bollywood at Jaipur’s Raj Mandir Palace Cinema during a current film screening — a truly special experience that is an inseparable part of everyday life in India.

Tag 4: City Tour

The golden-yellow Amber Fort offers royal splendor with its magnificent palaces and halls. From its elevated location just outside Jaipur, you can enjoy views of the surrounding hills and the Maotha Lake below. The Jantar Mantar, the largest stone observatory on Earth, bears witness to scientific knowledge that remains valid to this day, while the magnificent City Palace in the heart of the Pink City is still partially inhabited by descendants of the former Maharaja. The famous Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds, with its countless windows and balconies, is one of India’s most iconic photographic subjects and once served as a special viewing platform for the ladies of the royal court to watch parades and processions on the street below unseen. To conclude the day, a rickshaw ride through the bustling streets and markets of the city is an experience not to be missed.

Tag 5: The Enchanting Taj Mahal in Agra

Numerous architectural treasures still bear witness to Agra’s former glory and power. Majestically rising above the sacred Yamuna River, the legendary Taj Mahal (closed on Fridays) is considered more than any other monument as a symbol of India. It is said to reveal a unique charm at every time of day and in every weather, as the white marble and countless semi-precious stones shimmer in varying light. However, its builder, Shah Jahan, could only admire this view from afar during his final years, from his private prison in the mighty Agra Fort — also known as the Red Fort of Agra — which served as the center of power of the Mughal Empire for several generations.

Tag 6: Fire and Water for Mother Ganga

Ancient, labyrinthine, and bustling at first glance, the holy city of Varanasi captivates immediately. It is said that those who die in Varanasi escape the eternal cycle of life and death. Every day, countless pilgrims from all over India and the world gather at the approximately 90 ghats, temples, and shrines along the sacred Ganges River to purify themselves in its waters and perform religious rituals. A rickshaw ride to the evening Aarti prayer ceremony on the riverbank provides a first glimpse. Almost tangible is the spiritual bond that the priests weave each evening with their chants and the flames of countless oil lamps, as the light reflects on the dark waters and thousands of devotees follow the ritual from the riverbank and from boats on the river.

Tag 7: The Holy City of Varanasi

Mystical and timeless, the day rises at sunrise along the ghats of Varanasi. The sounds of a sitar underscore the intensity of the unforgettable impressions from the morning rituals between birth and death, which you experience on a boat ride (depending on water levels) along the river. A trip to Sarnath takes you to the birthplace of Buddhism, where Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment.
